U.N. OFFICIAL HAD MUCH COURAGE.(MAIN)

Until Sergio Vieira de Mello's death in Baghdad on Tuesday, almost no Americans had heard of him. Yet for several decades this remarkable U.N. career official had been advancing many of America's long-term policy interests while loyally serving the United Nations.

He saw nothing incompatible in this. In Iraq, he was working for peace and security and self-government -- the key American goals -- and while he appreciated American domestic politics, he could never fully understand why Washington so often undermined the United Nations instead of strengthening it.
