QLD: Race car star flags off Fleet First

BRISBANE, Aug 29 AAP - Champion racing car driver Dick Johnson flagged off 60 Queensland
car fleet managers today to launch a new campaign to cut fuel use in business vehicles.

Mr Johnson, a three times Bathurst 1000 winner and five times Australian Touring car
champion, said he was a strong supporter of driver education about environmental benefits.

Fleet First is a program initiative by the federal government and the Australasian
Fleet Managers Association.

Science and Resource Minister Nick Minchin said the program would help cut vehicle
emissions from the transport industry.

"Fleet First is a practical way government and business can work together to reduce
the impact of vehicles on the environment," Senator Minchin said in a statement.

More than 1.3 million cars and light commercial vehicles are used by business in Australia
pouring out 12.6 million tonnes of the harmful greenhouse gas CO2 each year.

Fleet First helps managers run their organisations more efficiently through vehicle
selection, fleet scheduling and better driver practices.

Senator Minchin said fleet vehicles drove 47,000 million kilometres a year and used
5,170 million litres of fuel.
